When checking keyword density, would it shock you to know the results from using different analyzer’s can differ by over 150%. I used 5 analyzer’s and rarely got close to the same keyword count or word count with any of them.

If you’re using an analyzer to optimize web pages for keyword density and you should, it’s important to measure keyword density to see if the right figure’s achieved. When using a keyword
density analyzer how do you know if the analyzer’s giving the right density & what’s the right density anyway ?

I set about trying 5 analyzer’s on 5 different pages ranked from position 1 to 30 on Google.com. I wanted to see how important keyword density was to ranking order and find the right figure.

If you don’t know what keyword density is, it’s the number of keyword’s divided by the word count on the page expressed as a percentage. So, 20 keyword’s on a page with a total word count of 500 should be 20/500 or a keyword density of 4%. As we’ll see,
it’s not quite so simple.

A keyword density of between 2% to 20% for a page is often quoted as a target figure. Personally I think at 20% you would be regarded by the search engine as spamming (to much repetition)
for which you could find your site penalised. It would also not make very interesting reading.

It might seem obvious to say, but there are only two ways to get higher keyword density. One is more frequent use of the keyword or phrase, the other is having fewer words.

It’s only when using an analyzer to look at keyword density, you start to realise how difficult & time consuming it can be to reach keyword density figures of 4 to 5% never mind anything
higher. Reducing the words on a page often seems like the easier answer to improving density.

Some optimizer’s believe that some search engines look at word count as well as density. It then adds a weighting factor against a page with a low count, compared to say another page with the same density but a higher word count.

But is this true, or just a theory and what’s an acceptable word count ?

A well known and respected analyzer that many optimizer’s use, for Google.com recommended a total word count of 505 to 795 with 436 to 629 words in the body text.

I carried out an experiment on Google.com running a query on the
exact phrase “keyword density” and then used a keyword density analyzer to determine the density & word count for chosen pages in the Google rankings.

Each page was stored to the hard drive to ensure the software was analyzing the same page each time. For the exact phrase “keyword density” there were 55,100 other competing pages on Google.

Keyword Density on the total page

The table this section refers to is at:

www.the-search-engine-optimizer.com\img\keyword_density_t1.gif

In the keyword density column the 1st figure is for “keyword” and in brackets for “density”. Only position 30 complies with the analyzers recommended total word count!

From the keyword density analyzer results it’s clear the No.1 position is not being significantly penalised for only having a word count of 161 and neither is No.10 with 102 words when
compared to the others.

Interestingly the No.10 & 19 positions have almost identical keyword density, still with low word count, but the one with lower count gets the higher ranking.

We know keyword density is not the only factor to determine page rank. What about keywords in the Meta Tags and link text and the main body content ?

For Google the keyword and description Meta Tags are supposed to be ignored. However a recent report by Jon Ricerca of www.searchenginegeek.com entitled “Does the Keywords Metatag
Affect SE Ranking?” would seem to suggest that might not be true.

The Meta Tag’s don’t seem to matter since the No.1 posn does not have them!

Next, a keyword in the visible link text and 2nd in the actual link URL to a page, the href part.

From the Keyword Density Analyzer, Posn 1 has keyword’s in the link text, but so do No’s 19 & 30. No’s 4 & 10 don’t have keyword’s in the link text.

Posn 1 also has a keyword in the link, but again so do No’s 19 & 30 and both 4 & 10 don’t.

Also on positions 10 & 19, No.10 beats 19 even though it has no keywords in the link text or link.

So far, No.10 beats No.19 even though they have almost the same keyword density. No 10 has a lower word count and no keywords in either the link text or link compared to No 19 which has both.

So what’s the missing factor/s that explain why No 19 has a lower ranking than No 10 when by the optimizer rules it should be the other way around.

It’s nothing to do with keywords in the title either, because they all have those.

What about keywords in the Alt tags, no its’ not that either, the only one that has those is No.4.

I do hope your following this so far !

Perhaps it’s due to keywords in the body content, but No.19 has more than No.10, so it’s not that.

Let’s not forget No.4 it has a lower keyword density than 10 or 19 but still manages to beat them both.

The only thing in the data so far that sets No.4 apart from the others is a higher keyword count in the body content. But that’s not likely to help since it also has a much higher body word count.

Keyword density in the body content

The table this section refers to is at:

www.the-search-engine-optimizer.com/img/keyword_density_t2.gif

*The SEO Analyzer did not return results, so word count was
calculated from the keyword density SEO did return & knowing the body content keyword count.

In the Body word count, none of these pages comply with the analyzer recommended figure of 436 to 629.

Now although the keyword density in the body content of No.10 is slightly higher than 19 it’s also higher than No.1, but it doesn’t get ranked No.1 because of it.

No.4 has a lower body keyword density than all except No.30, yet it still gets ranked No.4 !

Another factor to consider is keyword prominence or how close keywords are to the beginning of either the title, the link text or in the main page content.

The analyzer reported a minor keyword prominence problem with No 19 in the link text and body content and more of a problem with prominence of No.30 in the link text.

But to keep these prominence reports in perspective for No 19 & 30 we must not forget that No.4 and 10 have zero keyword prominence in the link text because they don’t have any link text !

Online Analyzer Keyword Density

One of the most detailed online keyword density analyzer’s is that from www.ranks.nl

The table this section refers to is at:

www.the-search-engine-optimizer.com/img/keyword_density_t3.gif

The above results show the keyword density & prominence for the words “keyword” & “density” as separate words and also as a two word phrase “keyword density”.

It seems a higher keyword density coupled with a higher prominence goes some way to explain the ranking order. The exception to this No.4 whose ranking is not due to keyword
density or prominence since on both counts it’s only slightly different to No.30.

Two other things are striking about the results from all analyzer’s, firstly the very wide variation in word count and secondly the variation in keyword count.

The word count by analyzer’s varies by as much as 81.3% (No.10), 44% for No.19 & 41.9% for No.30.

In the worst extreme (No.10) the keyword density calculated by the analyzer’s varies by 154.4%

The keyword counts for No.10 & 30 show the most variation. The keyword density software counts 3 occurrences of the word “keyword” and 3 of “density”. The online analyzer counts 8 and 5 respectively.

For position 30 the software counts 13 for “keyword” and 9 for “density” whilst the online tool counts 8 and 6
respectively. In the worst case this is a keyword count variation of 62.5%.

The software was set to look for keywords in the Title, Link text, Links, Header tags (h1-h6), Meta Keywords & Description tags, Body text & Alt tags. In fact the only place
it was not set to look are the comment tags, but then neither was the online analyzer.

Both the software and the Ranks online analyzer can exclude words shorter than a defined setting. In all keyword
density analyzer’s where the option was available it was set to ignore words of 2 letters or less.

To another online analyzer position No.4 had only 10 keywords and a body word count of 969 both of which differ from the figures already seen.

Can we use any tool to compare one page with another. Given that none produce consistently high word & keyword counts or consistent low ones, a relative analysis of pages is also questionable.

Keyword Density Analyzer Conclusions

Three software tools and two online tools have been shown to all produce widely differing results for word count (variation 81.3%), keyword count (variation 62.5%) and as a result wide variations in keyword density (variation 154.4%). This whilst analyzing 5 different pages with Google rankings from No.1 position to No.30.

It seems likely with 5 different tools all producing different results that Google itself also arrives at yet other figures for word count, keyword count, prominence & keyword density.

Based on the tests, these tools don’t produce absolute results or consistent relative comparisons between pages. The
differences in word count and keyword count between these analyzer’s could not be explained by a word exclusion filter.

The rankings of the test pages can not be explained just on the basis of keyword density, prominence, word count, keywords in the meta tags, headers, links or Alt tags.

This should come as no surprise, since we know other factors like on & off site links and link popularity all play a role.

What may come as a surprise is that the analyzer tools we rely upon give such widely differing results. Does this mean we should stop using them, no I don’t think so, at least not until
something better comes along.

Is your website listed on search engines? When people search for you, does your site show up on page 1 or page 20 of the search engine results?

Optimizing your site to get it ranked highly on the search engines can be a complicated subject. To simplify things, it’s helpful to first understand how search engines add sites to their database. Then we’ll cover some tips that you can put on your own website that will help you to get listed on search engines and get a higher ranking.

The Major Players

Let’s start off with the major search engines, the ones that most people use. Google is the most widely used search engine with Yahoo and MSN searches following close behind. While there are thousands of search engines, it’s always a good idea to start with submitting your website to the three largest. Why? Because 95% of all searches go through either Google, Yahoo or MSN.

Who Is Powered by Whom?

Many search engines do not have their own database, but rely instead upon data supplied by someone else. This is important to know so that you can submit your site to the most popular search engine databases first. For example, AOL Search and Yahoo Search get data from Google, while MSN and HotBot get some data from Inktomi.

How Search Engines Read Your Site

There are two ways search engines read your site: automated (crawlers) and human-entered (directories). Crawlers follow the links found on your site and enter your site into their search database based on text they find on your pages. This text is either found on your public pages, or the text keywords found in behind-the-scenes “meta tags”. The amount of your keywords found on your page, the more weight it has with the search engines and the higher your ranking. But in case you think you can load your page with keywords in order to fool the search engine, think again. Search engines are smart and you can be penalized for “spamming” keywords on your website. Major crawlers include Google, AltaVista and Inktomi.

Human Directories are few and far between. Just imagine hiring enough people to research the millions of website on the Internet! It’s no wonder they’re steadily being replaced by automated crawlers. Yahoo is one of the most famous human directories, where real people actually evaluate your site and categorize it in their database directory. More and more these search engines are relying on partial automation for categorizing and listing new sites in the search engine database. In addition, getting your listing in a Directory for free can take months. Some human directories are charging a fee for business sites to be included in their directory.

How Search Engines Index and Rank Your Site

Search engines use several techniques to determine which category your site belongs in and what keywords or key phrases people will use to find your site when using the search engine.

When submitting your site to search engines, they will ask you four things: the title of your site, a short description of your site, your keywords or key phrases (what words or phrases people typically use to search for sites like yours) and what category your site belongs in. Then they will often crawl your site, checking to see if the keywords/key phrases you supplied match the text on your website. And remember, you will be penalized for spamming your keywords and rank LOWER because of it. Also it’s important to note that search engines can not read the text in graphics, so if you are using a graphic-based navigation or have your keywords on a graphic next to your logo, the search engine will not notice it.

Some search engines will rank your site based on your title, description and keywords that are supplied behind-the-scenes in special coding called “meta tags.” While not every search engine will read meta tags, it certainly can’t hurt to use them. Again, there are rules: your Title meta tag can’t be more than 100 characters, your Description meta tag can’t be more than 250 characters, and your Keyword meta tag can’t be more than 1,000 characters. And anti-spamming of keywords applies to meta tags as well – no more than six instances of the same word in your Keyword meta tag or you’ll be penalized by the search engine. For example, if my key phrases include “business coach,” “starting a business,” and “small business coach,” that counts as two uses of the word “coach” and three uses of the word “business”.

Submitting Your Site to Search Engines

Once your site is primed and ready for the search engines, then you have to submit it to them. You have two choices: either go to each search engine and submit your site individually, or use a search engine submission tool. Remember that the majority of searchers use either Google, Yahoo or MSN, so consider submitting to those first. You’ll often find a link on their main page where you can add a site to their search engine. If you want to automate the process, use an automated submission tool. Make sure the submission search tool you select will analyze your site to tell you if you’re really ready to submit, then submit your site to the top search engines for you.

Preparing your site for submission to search engines can feel like a daunting task. With these tips in mind, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and frustration when it comes time to submitting your site and rank higher in search results.

See you on the Internet!

What is Pagerank? – Pagerank is based on how many links to one website. PageRank is a value that represents how important a page is on the web. Robots or Spiders figures that when one page links to another page, it is casting a vote for the other page. Also the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote is. It matters because it is one of the most important factors that determines a page’s ranking in the search results but It isn’t the only factor that Search engines uses to rank pages. Not all links are counted by Search engines. .Some links can cause a site to be penalized by Search engines.

Internal linking – Internal linking also plays a factor in the Page Rank of the pages within a site. The linking structure within the site should follow the themed approach to internal linking, which stresses importance on minimizing linking between 2nd and 3rd level directories and pages. Example – The homepage has a PageRank of 5. You link your homepage that has a PageRank of 5, to other web pages on your site, which will in turn have a PR of 3 or 4. Now, you link all of the secondary pages that have a PR of 4 to the tertiary pages that will in turn have a PR of 3.

External Linking – External linking is the biggest factor in determining a web sites PageRank. Increasing your PageRank is very difficult, but important. The actual amount of effect that Search engines PageRank has on the ranking of a website or web pages is debated, but what we do know is that a web page’s PR does play a big role in Google’s indexing and Google’s ranking. The higher a web page’s PageRank, the more frequently it will be crawled and refreshed. While in most cases, a higher PR will accompany a higher-ranking site; it is not always the case. PageRank is a pretty complex mathematical calculation, but can be broken down into a simple version. PageRank is Google’s scoring of Page 1. This scoring is based on the links that point to Page 1, and certain variables within the pages that the links come from. 1 link from Page 2 is held as a vote for Page 1, and if Page 2 has a high PageRank, this will is taken into account and will have a positive effect when calculating the Page Rank of Page 1. If Page 2, 3, and 4, all link to Page 1, but Page 2, 3, and 4 all have a PageRank of 3, then this will be taken into account when calculating the web page’s PageRank. In the second situation, the pages with low PageRank’s that link to Page 1 will not affect Page 1’s PageRank in a negative effect, but also will not affect it in a positive way.

The most difficult area of SEO is building link popularity. You may be thinking why? Because there are no easy ways to build link popularity. In this article I will tell you how to get links and how to find them.

First thing you must do is find a web site that you would like to trade links with. How do you find them? You can join link exchanges like www.linkexchangeit.com or you can search the search engine with keywords related to your site. Remember RELATED sites only! Let’s say your site is about cars, so you would search with keywords like car body repair, car, SUVS, trucks, vans, etc or let’s say your site is about games, so you would search with keywords like checkers, card games, chess, online games, etc. Now that you know what to do go and search for sites RELATED to yours and ask for a link exchange.

You could send them this email below if you like.

Dear (Put there name here),
Thanks for taking the time to read my email.

My name is (Put your full name here), I came cross your site today while I was searching on AOL and really like your site. I love the (put something here you like about there site here). Your site and our site is somewhat the same, so I was wondering if you would like to exchange links with our site (put your URL here). Our site is about (put what your site is about here).

By chance is your news section at http://www.there-web-site-here.com/news.html a good place that you could put my link at?

If you have any questions or need anything feel free to contact me at put-email@here.com or call me at (put area code here) 777-7777.

Try to find out the site owner’s name and if they have a phone number listed on the site call that number, you will get much better results that way because they know you are not some spamming robot that emails every site they come a cross. Download Google’s Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com) to make sure that inbound links are from decent sites, with a minimum of 1 on the toolbar. The higher the PageRank the better. Also remember that your homepage is not the only part of your site that you can get links for, so try to get links to other pages on your site. This will allow robots to spider your site better and have more ways in.

Here is more tips on how to get more links to your site.

1) Link to them first

2) Put no more than 20 links on your links page if you use one.

3) Use categories on your links page.

You have a business you want to promote. You’re looking for more traffic to your web site. But, how do you get that traffic and how do you get it for nothing?
Here’s a technique I use to increase web site traffic and get a better rank on Google. But, you need your own web site first. This won’t work for your otherwise.
Having said that, even if you don’t own a web site you should follow some of the steps here. The reason will become very clear nearer the end of this email.
What you are doing is researching for sites with a Google page rank of at least 4 and upwards that are relevant to the content of your site. Then link with them and have them link back to you.
To do this set up another page on your site for the purpose of including good quality links from other relevant sites.

Here’s how to do it…

1. Download Alexa Toolbar and install it on your computer. Get it here: http://download.alexa.com/index.cgi?p=cheepelectronic

2. Download Goole Toolbar and install it on your computer. Get it here: http://toolbar.google.com/

3. Create a “Spreadsheet” using “Excel” and create a colum for each of the following…

URL, Contact Email, Owner’s Name, Alexa Link Popularity, Google Rank, Contact 1, Contact 2, Contact 3, Link Accepted.

4. Go to Google Search Engine and key in a relevant keyword to your niche site.

5. When the results come up, go to each site (including the Google Ads that may come along with it)

6. Upon arriving at each site the first thing to check for is the Alexa Traffic Rank that shows up on your Alexa Toolbar. Aim for a traffic rank of 100,000 or less. Anything more than 100,000 leave the site and look for another one.

7. Next, look for the Google Page Rank. Aim for a PR (Page Rank) of “4” or more. Less than this leave the site and look for another one.

8. If you are happy with the Page Rank on Google and the Traffic Rank on Alexa, then place all relevant details on the spreadsheet you’ve created. Then move onto the next site.

9. Do this until you are satisfied with the number of possible contacts. You probably should aim to get 5 – 10 sites a day. Keep this up until you have reached the desired number of links you want on your page.

10. Set up a page on your own site and call it something like “Partner Links”.

11. Now you need to put a link to their site from your niche mini site. Grab a bit of text from their site and place it in your “Partner Links” page. Then turn that text into a link to their site.

12. Email each web site owner letting the know who you are and that you placed a link to their site from your site. Then request that they link back to you. If they don’t then just take their link down.

13. When you contact the web site owner, just place the date of contact on you spreadsheet under the colum “Contact 1”. Any other contacts should be placed on the other “Contact” colums.

14. Whether a link has been accepted or not, just place a “Y” (for YES) or a “N” (for NO) in the colum entitled “Link Accepted”.

That’s it. I have done this for my site and am starting to see an better rank on Alexa and beginning to increase my PR rank on Google.

The thing with this method of getting a better rank on Google is that it’s very time consuming and requires persistence on a daily basis. But it will work. Also, don’t expect a positive response from every web site owner. Most likely you’ll get more rejections than acceptances. Just carry on regardless.

The other thing is that you should ensure that you look for a Traffic Ranking of 100,000 or less on Alexa. This means that you are looking for high traffic web sites. This means a better chance of people clicking on your site. It only makes sense.

Also, you don’t need millions of links from just any site to gain a better rank in Google. You need good quality links and this is a good method to do this. That’s why I suggest looking for sites that have a Google PR rank of “4” or higher.

Remember I said that even if you don’t have a web site you should follow some of the steps here? Well here’s why…

The sites that have accepted your links are your future “Potential JV Partners”. They’re your number one contact names for Joint Ventures. They’re the first people you contact with your offers for their customers and subscribers.

As you’ve done the research, don’t just let all that work just sit there once you’ve created your link exchanges. You’ve just started a relationship with those people and you should make use of that opportunity. Even contact those who have not accepted a link to your site. Treat them as secondary contacts for Joint Venture purposes.

Just get crackin’ on this immediately.

There are many low cost ways to market your service or product both on the Web. All require tiresome manual research and constant attention. However, as a fellow entrepreneur, I can assure you that they will eventually pay off if you do it right. The search engines are a wonderful resource. One of the newer, more advanced, very accurate and rapidly growing is Google. Google’s proprietary PageRank© system is used to determine how relevant your site is. We have uncovered some of what makes Google tick.

First, to view your sites PageRank©, simply download the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, and visit your sites home page. Ironically, while we researched Google we stumbled upon the formula by conducting a search in Google.

The original* PageRank formula: PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + … + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

For math wizards:
PR(x) is the PageRank of x, C(x) is the number of outbound links on a page x, d is a damping factor set between 0 and 1 and is controlled by Google.

For the rest of us:
Your sites PageRank is almost completely dependent upon links to your site, backward or reverse links, reduced, to some degree, by the total number of links to other sites on that page. A link to your site will have the highest amount of impact on your PageRank if:

1) The page linking to yours has a high PageRank.
2) The total number of links on that page is low, ideally, just the one link to your site. A site with a high PageRank and a large number of outbound links can nullify the impact on your PageRank.

To increase your PageRank, simply get as many links to your site from pages with a high PageRank and a low number of total links. Theoretically you can obtain a PageRank of 100% . You can also increase your PageRank by attaining many links to your site, no matter what their PageRank, as long as they are ranked. This is a good overall strategy since it will help you across the board.

Another contributing factor to your sites Google ranking is the IR score. This score relates the relevance of the search query to the actual text in the linking page and your site. One of IR factors is the anchor text, or the text in the link to your page. According to a Google’s creator, “Anchors often provide more accurate descriptions of web pages.” Thus, for sites that allow you to add URL’s be sure to put a link title with descriptive keywords. Google also uses your page title, font sizes, formatting, keyword positions, and proximity. Remember this though: Computers determine the search results, but it’s humans that will, or won’t, click on the links, so be sure titles with keywords make sense.

In Summary:
Whether it is Google, other search engines or pay-per-clicks, the meticulous selection of key-phrases, and descriptions utilizing these key-phrases, are crucial to successful Web marketing campaigns. The final piece, probably the most important to determine ROI, is a tracking system to inform marketing personnel if the clicks being generated with any campaign result in sales. There are many campaign variables that even though you produced a 5% click-through rate, might still not result in sales.

* The formula was located by Pete Freitag. This was the original formula and it has likely evolved since the Google founders were at Stanford. But the same premise holds that your importance is dependent strongly upon what others say about you via how they link to you. It is, in my opinion, quite ingenious, and Google is one of the most important tools utilized by my staff for many purposes.

Having your own business is the American dream. It’s an escape from the day to day job that we hate or the boss that drives us crazy. For many of us, having that dream was fairly unattainable until the birth of the internet. E-commerce is an exploding business that is turning out new netrepreneurs every day. People have quit their jobs and dedicated their off hours to starting that dream. It’s an attainable goal for anyone but requires careful planning and consideration.

1. Easy or Not So Easy?
Don’t let anyone tell you that a business online is an easy way to go or a way to get rich quick. If you fall into that trap you’re in for disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, internet marketing can be extremely profitable and certainly a bit more affordable than most offline businesses but it’s not a cakewalk. Just as in any business you need to do your homework. Understand how things work and research, research, research. The good news is the internet offers lots of information to help your research.

2. Do you have what they want?
This is the million dollar question. Is what I have to offer in demand? Will people buy it? There are lots of tools out there to help you in this area. Google and Overture offer tools to help you know what people are searching for. Ask your friends if they’d buy your product online. Visit forums and see what people have to say. Is there a lot of competition for your product? Don’t be afraid if there is, this just means there’s high demand and an opportunity for you to make your product or site better. If there’s not a lot of competition this may be a huge opportunity for you.

3. It won’t happen overnight.
The internet is a “learn as you” go process. Things are changing all the time and experience is key. Don’t expect too much too soon and don’t get discouraged if things look a bit bleak heading out of the shoot. Most internet businesses took at least a year to show a profit and many took a lot longer. Resign yourself to the fact that it will take time. Nothing worthwhile happened over night. Stay focused on your goals and practice patience and persistence.

4. Will you make money on your own product or someone else’s?
You can sell your own product or business – In this process you do it all. You have a product or service and you to sell it online. You will need to coordinate the logistics of collecting money and providing delivery. You will do payment processing and you will perform customer service.
Affiliate sales – Affiliate sales is the process of marketing other merchants products or services. This can be done with or without a website. You are given a special tracking website address that tracks sales referred by your URL and you receive a percentage of each sale. You only perform advertising. There is no money to collect, or customer service to perform.
Drop shipping- The drop shipping process is where you accept orders for items you advertise on your website, however you do not hold any items in stock, instead you place orders you receive directly with the wholesaler and they deliver the items directly to your customer. You pay the wholesale price and your customer pays retail price. Your profit is the difference. You don’t have inventory to consider but you do have payables and receivables to process and customers to respond to.

4. There’s millions of sites out there, are they going to find you?
If you have a website, search engine optimization (SEO) is crucial. You won’t attract traffic to your website without it. There are things you can do to optimize your site. Read up on meta tag creation, there are lots of sites that offer free information on this. Also research website linking techniques. Both of these tactics will help you attain search engine ranking and acquire decent website traffic

5. Know your customers
Analyze your site traffic. Know what your customers are doing when they come to your site, where do they navigate to? Put yourself in their shoes. Find out what it is they are looking for. When they come to your site, how long are they there? There are free software tools that will help you with this but also you can post surveys, ask questions and get as much feedback as you can. Listen to your customers and they’ll respond favorably.

6. Know your products.
It’s a good rule of thumb to purchase and use the products you are promoting. This isn’t an absolute must but you’d be surprised how your ad campaign and marketing strategy can take form if you’ve actually used and experienced the product or service you’re selling. It’s a lot harder to convince someone they need something if you haven’t seen or used it yourself.

7. If it sounds too good to be true … you know the rest.
I’m constantly frustrated with ads that claim you can make lots of money and make it fast with little or no effort. There is no legitimate business that can do that for you. Get rich quick schemes are just that, they are schemes that could possibly bring in money through some illegal or legal creative maneuvering, but almost always disappoint you in the end. Check out all programs thoroughly and ask lots of questions.

8. Getting set up and the various costs.
Internet business costs are not as great as other business startups but you will have a few costs that you must budget for. For example, if you build a website there will be hosting costs. These are generally monthly fees and can be anywhere from $10 to $50 a month depending on your plan. Courses/Education should be budgeted. Search engine submission, with the exception of Google and DMOZ, now require yearly fees that can range anywhere from $20-$100 or more depending on your choices. Website building software may also have a fee. If you’ll be selling your own product you’ll need a merchant account to set up credit cards, etc. Don’t forget internet connection costs whereby you’ll need cable or dial up. I may have forgotten a few but these are the most common startup costs that you should consider budgeting for.

9. What to watch out for.
Scams are the biggest problem on the internet. Keep yourself aware of the latest scams by going to http://www.sec.gov/investor/online/scams.htm . Also invest in virus and firewall protection software. These aren’t popular expenses, especially starting out, but losing your computer to an attack is a dismal alternative.

10. To build a website or not to build a website.
Regardless of your internet business, it is a good idea to start with a website. It will ultimately become a reflection of you and your business. A website will build an image and draw viewers to your product or service. It will also allow you to provide and receive feedback as well as update your viewers on your products or services.

11. Email marketing.
Email and spam is a huge issue with regard to the internet. Know what the rules are before emailing anyone. The following site contains all the laws and may help you avoid unwanted trouble. http://www.spamlaws.com/federal/list108.html

12.The internet can be a lonely place.
Don’t go it alone. Make contacts and ask questions through the use of forums. This gives you the opportunity to learn the successes and failures of others and to also ask questions. You may even develop some great business partners in the process or possibly make a friend or two.

Starting an online business has become very popular among many people of all backgrounds throughout the world. It doesn’t matter if you are a high-school graduate, or you’re completing your third trimester of your second year in Chiropractic School. Any person with the desire to work from home can start an online business. Especially now more than ever with all the turnkey websites, “all-in-one” marketing solutions and such, one can literally have a business up and running within 24 hours.

It’s well known that nearly 95% of all online businesses will not succeed. So what exactly “makes or breaks” an online business? Simply put, the type of marketing used.

Internet marketing is as hard as you make it. It can be very hard getting past the “learning curve”, but once you do, nothing will stop the checks coming in month after month.

We’ll begin our internet marketing lesson with 7 small, but very powerful forms of advertising that can yield tremendous profits for you if used correctly!

1) Article Submission

Writing articles are one of the oldest forms of advertising on the internet. Whatever kind of business you do, write about it! Most articles written are between 500-1000 words. The way you advertise through articles is by having a “byline” or “resource box” at the end of the article. For an example, please look at the bottom of this article to see what one looks like.

After you have written an article of your business topic, you will then want to submit them to Article Directories or Websites that will publish the article you wrote. Here are some good submission sites:

http://www.stickysauce.com/wanted.htm
http://www.webpronews.com/submit.html
http://www.boconline.com/sub-art.shtml
http://www.powerhomebiz.com/termsofuse/articlesubmission.htm
http://www.promotionworld.com/pop/feedback/submitarticle.html
http://www.businessknowhow.com/newsletter/articleguidelines.htm

These should get you started, but if you would like more, or these aren’t towards your business, simply do a search at your favorite search engine for “submit article”.

2) Participating in Active Forums

In most forums or discussion groups, they allow you to include a little “signature ad” following every post you make. If you are fairly knowledgeable in your business area and post good answers to help people, more readers will be curious about you and will click on your link and be directed to your website.

Some great forums dedicated to internet marketing are:

http://www.williecrawford.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi

3) Pay Per Click / Google Adwords

If you’re not familiar with this type of advertising, please don’t be completely turned of by the title. Yes, you do need to pay for some advertising. And using pay per clicks (ppcs for short) allow you to drive very targeted traffic to your website. With a PPC, you literally “bid” on whatever keywords your potential customers will search for.

Another great way to grab traffic before you have to shell out your money is by utilizing Google Adwords. TO learn more about this, please visit Google Adwords tips at:

4) Search Engine Optimization

Let’s face it.. The best kind of traffic is free traffic, right? There are a ton of ways to get traffic to your website, but in my opinion, this is the most cost effective. After all, it’s free! Search Engine Optimization requires a great deal of knowledge of how search engines work, but it’s definitely not an impossible feat by any means. The basic rule of thumb is to create a website in such a way that your visitors will want to come back. Also, create a website that will make others want to link to your site, without any required link back to theirs.

Some great SEO (search engine optimization) resources are:

5) Paid Advertising On High Traffic Sites

Sometimes, you will find a website that allows advertising on their site. For a reasonable price, they will display your link and sometimes a description for a weekly or monthly fee.
One of the best ways to find websites that offer advertising is quite simple actually. You simply go to your favorite search engine, search for your businesses best keyword phrase and look through the results. These are the people you will want to partner with, especially if they receive a good amount of traffic. A good way to know if they receive a good deal of traffic to their site is by a neat tool called the Alexa toolbar. You can go directly to that site and download this tool, or you can simply go to :http://www.alexa.com and search for their site. When you get the results, it will say something like “Traffic Rank for ________.com : 2,445”. The main thing to remember is, the *lower* the traffic rank, the *more* traffic that website receives. So, a site with a traffic rank of 26,983 receives more traffic than a site with a traffic rank of 76,990.

6) Joint Ventures

A Joint Venture (JV for short) is just that. It’s a venture that you do jointly with one or more parties. This method isn’t only limited to those with their own product, as many people think. The way this works is by setting up a deal with a person who has a very large customer base already. What you do is literally “tap into” their resources. You see, they have already done the hard part (creating a list of people who have already bought from them). Now all you do is simply email them with a special proposal, and have them recommend your product/service to their list. This alone can product thousands of website visitors to your website. And in the end, can yield massive profits for you if done properly.

7) Having Your Own Affiliate Program

Generally speaking this form of advertising typically applies to those with their own products or services to sell. For example, if you create an information “how-to” digital ebook. Many times your merchant account will have a built in affiliate program manager that will allow people to join, and promote your product or service for a certain percentage that you determine.

Some great affiliate program managers that I have personally have used and recommend are:

http://www.clickbank.com
http://www.quickpaypro.com
http://www.homebasedbusinessindex.com/webhost.html (built in web hosting as well)

The main thing to remember when marketing your business is to keep your potential customers/visitors in mind. Build a website that caters to their needs and wants. If you utilize these resources for internet marketing, you will see the success that most individuals never truly see. Even though what is listed above gives a great starting point, don’t limit yourself to what’s listed above only. If you truly want to succeed with your online business, study the “Art of Internet Marketing”. Give yourself room for improvement, and never think you know enough to “get by” either. Internet Marketing changes as time does, so keep the ball in your court, and have fun while playing 😉

For those of you who have Home Businesses on the Internet, you know by now that you have to develop a steady stream of traffic to your website in order to produce enough sales to grow and substantiate your business. Bottom line…no traffic = no sales. No sales = failed business.

During my two years on the Internet, I have tried many forms of advertising that have been less than successful. I am writing this article to all the “newbies” out there who flock to these forms of advertising because they are easy and free, and after these advertising methods have produced none of the desired results, they leave with a feeling that they have been scammed and that the Internet is not the virtual marketplace that everyone has raved about.

In reality, the Internet is the virtual marketplace of the future and is producing mind-boggling sales for the entrepreneurs who are pursuing effective advertising methods.

The first form of advertising that leaves the worst taste in my mouth is called FFA advertising (Free for All). In my opinion, FFA sites prey on “newbies”, promising that they will put their ad on thousands of websites, often supplying the newbies with automated software so they can accomplish this with one click of the button.

Then their ad is placed on thousands of different FFA sites at one time. What they don’t tell you is that these pages your ad is placed on are never seen by the general public, because they aren’t listed in any search engines, directories, or any of the mainstream traffic locations.

To add insult to injury, while you’re using the automated software to place your ad on a thousand FFA pages, millions of other newbies are doing the same thing. There isn’t enough room on these FFA pages for all the incoming submissions, so your ad may be on these FFA pages for 30 minutes max, and is then dropped.

The real scam behind these FFA sites is that you have to provide your email address in order to submit to them. These email addresses are a free for all for whoever wants to use them. Your inbox is then bombarded with hundreds if not thousands of junk emails each day of people wanting you to join their opportunity.

The next advertising method that produces less than desired results is the surf for clicks programs. While these are not half as bad as the FFA sites, they are about 99% ineffective.

Basically, the way the surf for clicks programs work is that you are required to view various websites for a short period of time, for every website that you view, you will earn a credit. If you look at ten websites and earn 10 credits, your website will in-turn be shown to someone else 10 times.

Let’s look at this surf for clicks logically. Who are you advertising to? You are advertising to other network marketers and Internet business owners. If they already have a business, then how many do you think will sign up for yours? What are they looking for? They are looking to get traffic, the same as you…they are NOT looking to sign up for another program or purchase a product.

You must understand that you need to put your opportunity in front of the general public. Where does 85% of all the Internet traffic come from? It comes from the Search Engines.

Getting a listing in the search engines is also “targeted traffic”. Meaning that someone has to input a keyword combination that is associated with your website, and when your site is displayed, its because your site is specifically targeted to what they are looking for.

When this happens for you, you truly will be successful in your business.

There are many other forms of advertising on the internet that produce poor results, but these are the two biggest hitters that come to mind.

If you spend any time surfing the Internet, you’ve probably encountered a few error messages.

Error messages have numerous causes, such as misspellings, outdated links or internal server errors. When an error is encountered, your server will display specific generic error pages according to the error. These error pages are not only dead ends, but they are also very frustrating for your potential visitors.

When your visitors mistype your web address or click on an outdated link and receive the dreaded error page, they’ll most-likely click on their back button and never return. However, you can recover a majority of your lost visitors simply by taking the time to create some customized, user friendly error pages.

As servers run different types of software and do not function in the same manner, there isn’t a simple method for creating custom error pages that will work with every system. However, if you have your own domain and your site is hosted on a Unix/Linux server running Apache, this article will assist you in creating custom error pages.

If you’re not sure what type of server you’re on, visit the following web address to find out:
http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/

Before we begin, keep in mind, editing your server files is serious business. Even one small typographical error can wreak havoc — make sure you make a backup copy of any file you’re planning to edit.

Guidelines for creating your error pages:

1. Create your error pages in standard HTML — just as you would create any other web page for your site.

2. Don’t alarm your visitors. Never include the word “ERROR” in large, bold text. Your visitors may immediately become alarmed and think they’ve done something to cause the error. Instead, be apologetic and encourage your visitors to click on the navigational links to locate additional resources and information.

3. Your error pages should look just like the rest of your web pages. Each error page should contain good navigational links, a search feature, and provide information in regard to the specific error they received.

If you’d like to see an example error page, visit the following web address:
http://www.web-source.net/error.htm

Once you’ve created an error page, save it as the error name. For example, if you’re creating a customized error page for a 400 Bad Request error, your page should be saved as 400.html.

Here are some of the more common errors:

400 Bad Request
401 Authorization Required
403 Forbidden
404 File Not Found
405 Method Not Allowed
500 Internal Server Error
501 Method Not Implemented
502 Bad Gateway
503 Service Temporarily Unavailable

Once you’ve created your pages, you’ll need to access your server via FTP and create a new folder called “errordocs” where you store your HTML files. Upload your new error documents into your new folder.

Your next step will be to locate your .htaccess file and download it to your computer. (If you use FrontPage to publish your web pages, you cannot customize the .htaccess file, as FrontPage uses the .htaccess file. Editing the file may cause errors in your configuration.) The .htaccess file should be located on your server where you store your HTML files.

If the .htaccess file isn’t visible, you can create one within a plain text editor. However, you must first make sure your server isn’t configured to hide the file. Your FTP program should enable you to choose to display hidden files and folders on your server.

Once you’ve downloaded your .htaccess file, open it within a plain text editor, such as Note Pad, and add the following lines below any other text that may be present:

ErrorDocument 400 /errordocs/400.html
ErrorDocument 401 /errordocs/401.html
ErrorDocument 403 /errordocs/403.html
ErrorDocument 404 /errordocs/404.html
ErrorDocument 405 /errordocs/405.html
ErrorDocument 500 /errordocs/500.html
ErrorDocument 501 /errordocs/501.html
ErrorDocument 502 /errordocs/502.html
ErrorDocument 503 /errordocs/503.html

If you’re creating your own .htaccess file, open a plain text editor and add the above lines.
When typing in the information, make certain you type it exactly as it appears above. You can include the error documents of your choice.
Once the file is complete, save it as .htaccess and upload it to your server, via FTP in ASCII mode, where you store your HTML files.

For additional information on File Transfer Protocol (FTP) you may visit:
http://www.web-source.net/ftp_basics.htm

If you have a Windows operating system, you will be unable to save the file as .htaccess. You’ll need to save it as htaccess.txt. Once you upload the file to your server, you can rename it to .htaccess.

That’s all there is to it. When your visitors click on an outdated link, your custom error page will now be displayed.
Creating your own custom error pages is well worth the time and effort, as they will enable you to recover an unlimited number of your visitors. If you follow this step by step guide, you can have your pages up and running in no time.
