6: The hidden benefits to having the right links.
Every site online has an index or default file as its home page file. But outside of that rule you can name the other pages whatever you like. So why not cram the names with keywords and/or keyphrases relevant to that page and your site? We’ve just scored again 😉

Eg exercise-equipment-reviews.htm is our reviews page.

Note the hyphen again always try to avoid using spaces when naming your files or pages. You will get a horrible looking 20% appearing, which is something the browsers throw in there to represent a space.

If we then name the link to this page from our other pages ‘exercise equipment reviews’ and also make the link bold we’ll score a whole bunch of points on the SE’s. If you then use the other techniques described on this page to optimize the page exercise-equipment-reviews.htm around the phrase ‘exercise equipment reviews’. You’ll be well on your way to getting a top listing in the engines. 😉

Keywords and keyphrases in a link and the name of a page file are very important boosters.Anyone would be a fool not to optimize them to the hilt. But this is often overlooked and simply not known about.

7: Name your Images properly and utilise their Alt tags.
Each image file displayed on a site is linked to with a line of code containing the path to the image. So along the lines of our link strategy above lets utilise that link and fill it with keywords.

8: Site map and doorway pages.
A site map simply consists of links to all the pages on your site. It may be that the way you have your site structured you will have some pages that don’t link to each other. Having a site map linked to from every page not only helps visitors navigate your site but also acts as a highway for the ‘spiders’ to crawl all of your site quickly and easily. Plus think of all those juicy keyword and keyphrase links on the one page. 😉

Doorway pages consist of the techniques mentioned already on this page but taken that little bit further. Essentially the pages focus heavily around a keyphrase and utilise the techniques mentioned here sometimes to the detriment of grammar and readability. A doorway page exists to get a listing in the SE’s for its keyphrase and when visited it simply has a link to the main site.

If your site is pretty small then it may be useful to have some keyphrase targeted doorway pages. If your sites a little larger there’s no reason why you can’t focus the existing pages on a keyphrase properly as described here and have them do the same job as a doorway page.

9: Link exchange.
Over the last 2-3 years or so the links pointing to your site have become extremely important.Following Googles lead the SE’s have placed more emphasis on the related and relevant links a site has. The better these links are the better your sites ranking. It’s important to state that not just any old link will do although this will help a little a relevant link would be much more beneficial.

So back to our example site –
Our site sells and reviews exercise equipment that’s all. That’s a pretty big area by itself anyway. But what if we exchanged links with a site selling exercise clothing, exercise-clothing.com. One of our keywords is in there which is even better. We add value to our site, exercise-clothing.com adds value to their site our ranking is boosted in the SE’s and the SE provides better results. Everyone’s a winner.

It’s not good enough just to find relevant sites. Ideally you should be finding sites that get good results in the SE’s already. Linking to one of these sites will give your site a great boost.

But how do you find out how well a site is ranked?

Other than to say once you have it installed the little horizontal green bar in the middle of the toolbar displays the Page ranking(PR) of any site you visit. Other benefits of the toolbar include, search Google from whichever site your on, a popup stopper and an autofill form feature, enter your details once and whenever you need to fill a form in online you can do it with one click.

http://download.alexa.com – Alexa toolbar – Alexa is a search engine owned by http://www.amazon.com – Amazon. This toolbar goes into even more detail about a site you visit. You can check its ranking, who’s linking to it and even go back in time and view the site as it was years ago. There’s also a search feature for Alexa and Google, and a search feature for Amazon built in, so you can search any of them from any site. Handy for ordering those books, CD’s and DVD’s.

The other benefit of these toolbars is that they track sites that you visit. Not in an intrusive way and totally anonymously. What this means is that if you visit your own site regularly just by having the toolbars installed you will boost its rankings. 😉

I recommend you install both these tools. They install across the top of Internet Explorer underneath the address bar. It only takes a minute or two for installation and its done without any need to download software. Once installed you can always right click them and close them if they get in the way. Very handy little things.

10: Search Engines and Submissions.
To round off this article and tie things up I’m going to say a little bit about which search engines to submit to and why, how to go about it and why you need not pay anything to get into the major SE’s.

http://www.google.com – Google is king of the search engines producing the most accurate and relevant results for any search and up until recently it ‘crawled/spidered’ the web once every six weeks or so, doing what was called the ‘Google dance’. So called because as their database was updated ranking of sites could shift dramatically for a few days before settling back down. This has now stopped as of Q2 2003.

Google now crawls constantly and there is no longer any major shift in listings. Entry into Google is free and can be very quick, probably the quickest outside paid listing. A site should appear in Google within six weeks of submitting the URL. This is still a long time to wait, but it works out quite well if you use the next little tactic I’ll explain after the next two paragraphs.

Relationships between the SE’s have changed dramatically yet again over the last 12 months.

Google has been supplying search results for AOL and Yahoo amongst others. Yahoo has bought out the major SE Overture for millions of dollars and a few months later bought out another less well known but significant SE, inktomi, who actually supply listings to MSN, Overture, HotBot, BBC, About.com again for millions of dollars.

Yahoo is now basically consolidating these engines and will I’m sure restructure its own sites search algorithms to bring these engines online. Yahoo currently charges for a listing in its directory $299 last time I checked. But since they brought their new search engine seperate from their directory there’s no need to pay to enter yahoo.

By far the fastest and most cutting edge way to get your site crawled by the search engines is to use a tactic called http://www.makemoneyonline.info/ref/blogandping.htm – Blog and Ping. This will call the main search engine spiders over to your site when you choose and get you indexed within days. Keep this up and your whole site, all its pages, will be indexed before you know it. Hand submission or automated software?
Well neither really these days. You can have your home page indexed simply by finding another site to exchange links with. Google actually states that they prefer to find sites by crawling the web rather than through their submission service. This will work much faster than the submission service.

If you do decide to submit to the search engines then ordinarily I would recommend submitting by hand one at a time. I’ve done this for the last five years. Simply because the software available to submit a site wasn’t up to the job. But finally there is a piece of software that is up to the job and more than that it helps with the choice of keywords, checks the optimisation of your site pages, checks for broken links, reveals your link popularity, tracks and reports visitors to your

site and will report on your position in all the major engines for your chosen keywords.

In the past there was a chance that a site could be blacklisted or not even listed if it was submitted by software. This software gets around this problem by simulating a browser whenever it deals with the search engines, be it submitting your site or reporting on its ranking.

1: Buy the right Domain names!
The best way to increase your rankings in the SE’s(Search Engines) and for the least amount of effort is to choose the right domain name for your site from the start. The SE’s give a domain name the highest prominence and score when issuing a ranking. So it’s a major priority to have your domain name contain keywords relevant to your site content.

The other point to remember is that domain names can have up to 67 characters in them including the extension(.com, .net etc) now as opposed to the original 23. So you can load your domain name with a number of keywords to boost your ranking, just remember to use a hyphen to separate them out.

This also means that if a really great domain name has gone you can get something close and in fact better because you could simply add another keyword. Eg say exercise-equipment.com wasn’t available, I could register best-exercise equipment.com or cheap-exercise-equipment.com.

I have a number of clients using this technique very successfully, and of course if you check out the address bar above this very site does the same thing. 😉

2: Choose the right Title for your page.
The title of your page is what visitors will see across the top of their browsers when they visit your site. It’s important that each of your site pages is titled differently to distinguish them from each other and to tie in with the content of the page.

This is also the title of your listing when your site is returned in the results of a Search Engine.

This is probably the second most important thing to get right after choosing your domain name. If your domain name has good keywords then repeat these keywords in the title of your page, add a hyphen and then add your keyword rich title for that page. So going back to the example above exercise-equipment.com your title should probably be along the lines of –

Best Exercise Equipment – Best, Cheap, New and Used Exercise Equipment.

Notice how I get exercise equipment in there twice, first as the name of the site and then as a description of the page. The capitalising of the main words within the title will help your page stand out in the results a little. Don’t be tempted capitalise all your letters this looks cheap and some directory’s will not list your page with a title in this state.

I’ve mentioned keywords a fare bit already and I should probably say jump down to No5 for a better idea of what they are and how to use them.

3: Use the H1 tag on the, on page, title/heading of your page.
A H1 tag is the heading text tag in HTML. SE’s give this tag more relevancy as it’s generally used for the title of a page eg h1 best exercise equipment /h1.

That ‘s the actual on page title and not the browser title.

If you try this out you’ll find that it looks pretty ugly, with lots of space around it and much to chunky for a nice looking site.

So here’s a trick you can use to keep the H1 tag but have the text appear as normal. *whisper use css style sheets to shrink the text back to size. Check the title of this page ‘Web site optimisation Part1’ that’s a H1 tag that’s been fixed. Big difference isn’t there.

This is a little known but very useful secret. 😉

Here’s the code to do the trick, drop it into your css document or place it ‘style’ tags at the head of your code –

h1 {font-size: 13px; margin: 0px;}

Its that simple, play around with the font-size until it’s in proportion to the rest of your page.
Remember it’s the title of your page and should stand out a little from the rest of the text.

4: Meta tags are still useful. Choosing keywords.
Not as important as they once were due to abuse. But still used by a number of well known search engines, the new Yahoo search checks them as does the MSN search. But Google gives them little relevance. Which means it’s still important to use them to cover all your bases.

Essentially the meta tags you should be using when targeting the search engines are keywords, description and robots.

Keywords should also contain keyphrases and list keywords/keyphrases relevant to the page they appear in. There are two ways to list your keywords/keyphrases. Either with commas separating them or without. The benefit to not using commas is that the keywords side by side can also be read as keyphrases by the SE’s. Where as a comma separates everything out. So not using commas allows for some odd combinations to be picked up by the SE’s.

That’s just an example off the top of my head I haven’t researched the words as I normally would, you should also have much more in there around 20-30 words at least. Notice again I’ve started of with ‘best exercise equipment’ to echo and boost the use of that phrase elsewhere as discussed above.

The description is self explanatory again and it’s a good move to echo the title of the page and fill it out a little so –

meta name=”description” content=”best exercise equipment – best, cheap, new and used exercise equipment reviewed and available to order online”

The robots tag is very simple and is not strictly necessary but useful. What it does is tell the visiting SE spiders what to do when it comes to listing your site. Spiders are the little programs that crawl the web gathering info on websites for the SE’s. You can also use something called a robots.txt file to further control the spiders, but I won’t go into that here since its not strictly necessary and the robots tag is enough for our aims at the moment.

Here’s an example –

With this we’re telling the spider/robot to follow all the links when visiting this page.
If you have a members area or an admin area on your site that you don’t want listed in the SE’s, or any other pages you want to keep to yourself then you can use this –

A well known and very useful tool for checking out what search words people are using on the SE’s is www.wordtracker.com . When you know what people are searching for you know what keywords and keyphrases you should be weaving into your website. This tool is used by all the online Marketing experts. Another tool is the http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ – Overture suggestion tool which will list the number of times a word or phrase has been searched for on the Overture engine over the previous month. A handy tool that will query Overture directly from your desktop and store all results of your keyword searches is http://www.goodkeywords.com/products/gkw/ – Good Keywords.

5: Body text Keyword/Keyphrases and bold text.
This is very much where the focus is when it comes to keywords and keyphrases. Generally it makes sense the more focused your body text is on what your page is about the better you will get ranked. In those terms everyone’s a winner. You get better listing and your content is more relevant in order to achieve that. Does that make sense ? let me clarify.

Returning to our examples again our site is called exercise-equipment.com
We’ve already used the phrase ‘exercise equipment’ in our domain name, page title, on page title and in our meta tags.
If we now add this same phrase to the main text of our page a number of times ideally near the top within the first paragraph we’ll boost our ranking in the SE’s yet again.

Note you should try to make the phrase fit the text and not just cram it in there. It’s also important not to over do it. As it is with the other techniques described in this article. You can get your site dropped and even barred from the SE’s if it’s seen to be ‘spamming’ them by abusing these techniques. So tread carefully and try not to be tempted to over do it.

Back to the keywords/keyphrases, there’s a further twist to this if we also make the body text ‘exercise equipment’ bold we’ll score again in the SE’s since text in bold is seen as being more important and again more relevant. 😉 The side benefit is that it breaks up the text a little on the page too for our site visitors and makes the page a little more interesting and easier to read.

The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors. You need to be extremely careful with keyword research so that you don’t miss excellent opportunities or aim so broadly that you target phrases that will never rank well. Here are 10 strategies to guide you along the way: 1. Know your potential customers.
We can’t tell you how many businesses we’ve met who simply pick keywords out of thin air. They don’t talk to customers or hot prospects in order to determine what might be a useful set of keywords.

2. Start with core words.
A core set of keywords – even if too broad – can stimulate creative thinking.

Examine industry trade group web sites and related newsletters to find potential keywords.

4. Study competitors.
Some companies make a bigger deal of competitors’ keywords than they should, but it’s still a useful strategy. Don’t hesitate to try some ideas; Wordtracker and other sources can confirm whether you have a search term people might or might not use.

8. Limit your selection.

9. Tie keywords to site planning.
Pick keywords you can work with over time. Make sure you don’t plan to drop a page from the web site or change it so often that your target keywords may be knocked off or irrelevant every 30 days.

10. Study your log files.

Pay Per Call is the next wave of advertising on the Internet. Similar to a Pay – Per –Click advertising. Pay Per Call has a lot more to offer and a wider audience in mind. The Pay-Per Call (PP-Call) is geared towards small businesses that do not have a web presence on the internet. However, this form of advertising can be used by all types of business or services offered on the net. Advertisers create an ad similar to a Pay-Per-Click (PP-Click) ad. Advertisers choose key terms in which they would like to appear under. They also choose their geographical location (local, regional or national) Pricing starts at $2 and can exceed $20. The ad itself consists of a headline and 2 additional lines of text, (including a URL if the company has one). Surfers then call the toll free number shown in the ad. After the surfer calls the number, the call is forwarded to the actual business phone. Seems pretty basic doesn’t it? But, I had a few questions I needed answered so I contacted Ingenio and spoke to them about their service.

My first question regarded calls placed after business hours. If my business phones are manned Monday – Friday, 9 to 5, will calls still come in after 5pm on Friday? The answer is that currently there is no automated scheduling that will turn your ads on or off at a specified time. However, you can go in manually and pause your account so that your ads are not shown during non-business hours. The automated scheduling is in the process of being implemented but there is currently no set date for this to take effect. Of course, you can place your business hours in the ad as well but this may take up valuable space that could be better utilized describing products or services. Businesses that have a call center for after hours calls are effectively 24 hour businesses, so this should not be an issue for them.

My next question concerned wrong numbers and short calls. We have all done it. We see one number and dial another. Or, we see something and on impulse we reach for the phone, and then change our mind ten seconds after dialing. So, does the advertiser pay for these types of calls? Is there a time limit a person needs to be on the phone for? There answer is yes. The calls need to last at least ten seconds. This should be more than enough time to establish that a wrong number as been dialed. I also wondered about people trying to beat the system. The trouble with PP-Click is that people may dial and occupy a salesperson with no intent other than to try and boost their revenue off the ads placed on their site. Ingenio has taken this into account. They can track calls that come in through their system. Any numbers seen abusing it can be blocked. Hopefully, this will discourage any type of scam to boost profits on sites that sponsors these ads.

I was also interested to know about ads that did provide a URL. Was there an additional charge levied when someone clicked on the ad? Fortunately, there is not. If a business sells over the net as well, they could certainly use this to their advantage. Of course, one of the main advantages to this type of advertising is that it caters to potential customers that do not, for whatever reason, like to make purchases online. Overall PP-Call may be worth its weight in gold. At least the potential is there. Will it surpass PP-Click as far as the preferred method of advertising? Probably, not. With search engine algorithms changing seemingly daily, the quest to rank high in the search engines and stay there is proving to be quite the challenge for most webmasters. One of the more recent popular ways of achieving this is through buying text links on websites that have high PR’s (page ranks) on Google and that also rank well in the other major search engines. Is buying text link placement worth it?

Purpose – the primary purpose of buying a text link on a website that ranks better in search engines than yours is to receive a backlink to your site, without having to reciprocate a link back (as this dilutes the quality of a link). This backlink counts as a “vote” for your website and especially if coming from a site that is credible to the search engines, helps your site establish credibility as well. For example, a website has been online for three years and currently has a PR of 7. Your site is three months old and has a PR of 2. The 3 year old website places a link to your site from their homepage. As this site has history and is therefore established, this “vote” from a PR 7 website holds a lot of value. Compare this to a site linking to yours that is only a year old and holds a PR of 1 – it makes sense that you would want links coming from older sites that have high PRs. The higher the number and the better the quality of backlinks your website receives, generally the higher your rank on the SERPs (search engine results page).

Not only are text links great for search engine purposes, but if placed well, can actually drive traffic to your site. And whose website nowadays couldn’t use more traffic? Enough said.

Those are the benefits behind purchasing text links. But what are the disadvantages?

1)Cost – it’s not uncommon to pay $100 monthly for a 3 word textlink on a PR 6 website. If you do choose to go this route, choose your text carefully and budget wisely.

2)Relevancy to search engines – if you’re running a homemade toys website and have a popular online pharmacy website linking to yours, this won’t be as relevant as say having Mattel® linking to you. Remember that search engines are becoming more and more sophisticated and they can tell whether two sites have complimentary, competitive, or completely unrelated website content.

3)Limited link length – rarely are you given the option of selecting more than three words when purchasing links. You may have difficulty coming up with only three keywords relevant to your website, so this can often prove to be a difficult task.

4)Page is already populated with other text links – online auction sites that have sellers auctioning off website text links are notorious for selling textlinks on websites that already have 50 more on the same page. Look for sites that limit the number of textlinks sold.

5)Search engine spam – your site linked on every single page of a 3000 page website using the same keywords and url can be considered spam to a search engine. If you choose to purchase multiple text links on multiple websites, make sure your linking text varies.

The lesson is to be simply cautious. Using a textlink broker to find relevant and complimentary websites to buy links from can prove to be highly beneficial – just do your research first. Would a $100 monthly textlink investment be better spent on a pay-per-click (PPC) campaign, or will the long term benefits of buying a text link outweigh a temporary influx in visitors? Return on investment is key – whichever route will yield you the highest ROI should be your ultimate determining factor.

Most web hosting companies will provide you with basic web traffic information that you then have to interpret and make pertinent use of. In the case that a significant percentage of visitors are exiting your website on a page not designed for that purpose, you must closely examine that particular page to discern what the problem is. Once you pinpoint potential weaknesses on that page, minor modifications in content or graphic may have a significant impact on the keeping visitors moving through your site instead of exiting at the wrong page.

After you have analyzed your visitor statistics, it’s time to turn to your keywords and phrases. Notice if particular keywords are directing a specific type of visitor to your site. The more targeted the visitor – meaning that they find what they are looking for on your site, and even better, fill out your contact form or make a purchase – the more valuable that keyword is.

However, if you find a large number of visitors are being directed – or should I say misdirected – to your site by a particular keyword or phrase, that keyword demands adjustment. Keywords are vital to bringing quality visitors to your site who are ready to do business with you. Close analysis of the keywords your visitors are using to find your site will give you a vital understanding of your visitor’s needs and motivations.

If you don’t know already, one of the key success factors to getting loads of free Google traffic to your website is increasing page rank. So just how do you increase your page rank? Well, it’s all in the linking.

To be honest I never could quite figure this Google thing out, how it ranks good sites from bad sites. One day it all clicked for me and its so simple when you look at it from Google’s point of view. Google keeps its customers by providing relevant sites to your search queries. How does it choose the best sites for what you are looking for? Well, first of all it needs to be relevant (key words) and secondly it needs to be useful and of high quality. One way Google knows to measure quality is by the amount of links referring to your site. It stands to reason a site referred to by 100 websites may be more useful than a site referred by just a few right?

So how can we increase our sites chances of shooting up the search engine rankings with incoming links?

The quality of the links you receive is very important. Choose websites that firstly are related and preferably with a higher page rank than your site. The higher the quality link the higher page rank you will receive. In other words getting a link from Amazon.com is going to be worth more than a link on your daughters home page.

Basically there are 3 types of links, Outbound links which are easily added to your site, Reciprocal links where site A links to site B and site B links back to site A, and finally inbound links. These inbound links are the most important of all.

Let me describe how to get links in order of their importance.

How to get incoming links

1.Write articles like this one. Choose a topic you know and write up a short 500 word articles with a link back to your website and post it to article directories. Not only are these one-way links but other websites will pick it up and post one way links on their websites. Google gives you a big tick for each one way link!

2.Viral marketing. Ask other website owners directly if they would like to post your article either on their website or include it as part of their newsletter. If it’s a good article chances are readers will in turn pass this on to other readers providing advertising for both you and the other Webmaster. Like a virus, it spreads to more and more readers who may post the article, providing more one-way links.

3.Post to forums related to your area and include a link in your signature file. It is critical to join in the discussion and not blatantly advertise, as this can look unprofessional and self-gratifying. Add value to the discussion and simply provide a link in your signature. Visit some forums and see who you would link to in the discussion and try and copy what they did right.

How to get reciprocal links

Ask Webmasters directly. These are a little easier to ask for as its clear you are providing them also with a link. Best to first link to their website, then personalize the contact commenting about something on their website specifically. I have found personally calling them if you have the contact phone number the best method. My friend David Newton at www.simplysolo.com has found this an invaluable way to gain in excess of 1,000 inbound links for his site.
Simplified it should go like this:

a.Find a relevant site as a potential link partner. Tip – Try entering this into google “your keyword or phrase” + “add url”. This will then list the most popular sites that will allow you to link back to them.

b.Firstly create a link to their website

c.Contact them directly showing them your link to them with url of their site and something you liked about their site, something unique. Compliments can only help here.

d.Schedule to follow them up in one months time and try again if necessary. Best to keep a spreadsheet

Of course not all will link to you and it’s a bit of a numbers game but you can get results. Its better to personalize your contact than mass e-mailing a general group of websites.

Don’t forget to always be polite and keep up a schedule where you will aim to get say ten or twenty links out there per week. You will then have quite a collection after a few months and traffic should start flowing to your site.

There are those that get on the computer one night and find that all of their Web pages have disappeared from Google. While, others are still in the search engine index, but don’t rank high for nothing, not even for their Web site’s name. It’s a Web site owners worst nightmare, getting kicked out of the search engines.

Ultimately, many webmasters had little or no warning that this was going to happen. Many webmasters are left with no idea why they were kicked out and are left wondering how to get back in Google’s search engine. There could be any number of reasons why a Web site is banned by Google. The most common reasons for being banned are listed below in this article.

1. Duplicate Content
This is when multiple Web pages have the same content. Usually Google will just give a penalty to the Web page for this, where the page won’t rank very high for the keywords in that Web page, but there have been cases where complete Web sites were banned because they had to much duplicate content. You should make sure there is no other Web site using your content.

To check for duplicated content simply search with unique phrase on your Web page. If you find a Web site that has stolen your content you should contact the site owner and tell them to take it down or face legal action. Also, for copyright violations visit www.google.com/dmca.html and notify them that someone is infringing on your site’s copyright

2. Cloaking
This is Web pages created just for search engines, where it delivers one version of a page to a Internet user and a different version to a search engine. Cloaking Web pages are created to do well for particular keywords. There are various ways to deliver cloaking Web pages. Each search engine’s spider has an agent name, the cloaked page is than only delivered to the spider with the user agent name that was chosen.

You can also deliver cloaked pages to the search engines by IP address, but Google and other search engines say they can detect cloaking. There are other reasons to use cloaking, such as custom language delivery and geotargeted advertising.

3. Hidden text or hidden links
This is text or a link that is invisible to the naked eye on a Web page, but are seen by spiders. Search engines use to have a hard time spotting this technique, but now days you should avoid doing this because Google and other search engines can spot this easily. Even if a search engine doesn’t spot your hidden link, a competitor might find it and report your site. Sometimes this can be done without even knowing, so you better double check each Web page that you have messed with in the past few weeks.

4) Keyword stuffing
Keyword Stuffing is when you load a Web page up with keywords in the Meta tags or on the Web page’s content. The General techniques today for keyword stuffing are repeating the same word(s) over and over again in the Meta tags or on the Web page’s content or using invisible text, as we talked about up above in this article. If the word is repeated to much it will raise a red flag to the search engines and they likely will place a Spam filter on the site.

5) Linking to bad neighborhoods
Bad neighborhoods are designed to increase your Web site’s ranking or is Web site’s using Spam techniques to increase search engine ranking. You should not link to any Web page that uses Spam techniques to increase ranking. You also should not join link exchanges that are designed to improve ranking or Page Rank. If you are not aware of linking to any Web site like this, you should check each outbound link on your Web site.

6) Buying links for Search engine ranking
This where a Web site owner buys links just to increase his or her ranking. This is also used to increase Page Rank. Google and other search engines still have a hard to detect this, but they are starting to catch on to this technique. If Google is aware of the site, they can just discount the Page Rank, so they can’t pass Page Rank on.

7) Machine Generated Web sites
This is a site that generates hundreds of web pages that are basically the same page repeated hundreds or thousands of times, but with a few unique lines of text and unique title. Often times, search engines can’t spot this, if done right by the site owner. However, if a spider doesn’t spot your machine generated Web pages, a competitor might find it and report your Web site.

What to do after you are Spam clean?
Once you have cleaned up your Web site, you can try contacting Google by visiting http://www.google.com/contact/. Tell them that you made a mistake and won’t do it again. Even if you do contact Google, they most likely won’t let your Web site back in and if you happen to get back in, you better keep your Web site squeaky clean because I doubt you will get other chance.

If you can’t get in touch with Google, I suggest that you wait for a few months after Google’s spider visits your Web site and see if you get your ranking back or at least where you can see that your ranking is going up in the search results. During this time you should not change your Web site around much and give the search engines time to spider your Web site.

I really don’t think that many Web sites have dropped because Google is penalizing them. Instead, I think Google has changed the factors or adds more weight to a factor(s) that they use to rank Web sites in the search results. All search engines make periodic changes to the way they rank Web sites in the search results, so don’t be surprised if one week you rank number one and the next week you rank 30TH.
