Are you generating enough links back to your web site through a reciprocal link system?
This article will give you a couple of ideas of how you can get visitors to provide you with a link back to your site and make that reciprocal link work at its best.

Simply by having a links page may not be enough. Search engines are smarter and so are computer users. Every day new content is added to the web that might be good or bad content. One of the main functions of a search engine is to weed out the good from the bad. So if you do have a simple “links page” make sure
the descriptions provided by your reciprocators are detailed enough for the engine to crawl and return good content. If your site is not a link directory, try to
incorporate your links pages into your sites pages. Embedding links in pages that only pertain to the content on that page. This will definitely get your page ranked higher compared to having links on a page with a bunch of other random links such as on a typical links page.

An idea you can use to generate links and links back to your site is by asking your visitors to reciprocate if they join your service, (as simple as subscribing to a monthly newsletter) making it a requirement. An example of this might be as follows:

You have patent an idea to create art from aluminum beer cans. Your art consist of various brands of beer. A piece of your art might consist of one brand or a variety of brands composed into a collogue. How to promote this novel idea? Offer other relating websites to provide your site with content. Explain to them that their content could be a promotion of their own site by means of an article or example of their services. Before they can give you content they must have a link located somewhere on their site. When you have visited their site to check for your link then you would post their content onto your site. You could create pages that contain an article like: “How to brew your own beer” written by recipicalwebsite.com. and on that page you would make sure that your aluminum beer can art has a nice blurb with a link to a detail page or “Purchase Art Here” page. You can see how this can lead into a three
fold win-win situation.

You get a reciprocal link.

You get new content.

You get to promote your product on a new page.

Your reciprocator gets a new page that promotes their product.

This is just one idea and brief in explanation at that. If you don’t quite get it let me know and I will try to explain in a different manner.

If you are a new media professional such as a web designer or graphic artist you can test this idea at NADmedia.net. You can submit your content by providing a link back to NADmedia.net. just visit the site for details. NADmedia.net gets indexed on a daily basis from Google so your 5 minutes will be well worth the time spent on the process of reciprocating.

Happy website promoting to you!

There are several factors that determine the benefit that you get when you exchange links with any website. Sometimes you may be giving away some of your hard earned PR (Page Rank) without getting it back in return. While it is debatable if the primary purpose of exchanges is the traffic or the PR gain, a combination of both these motivations is usually present when we exchange links. Apart from the direct traffic, some of the other factors that help to determine the value of an incoming link are

1> The PR and number of links
The higher the PR of the page linking to your site, the better the link in general. The PR that a page has, gets distributed between all the links on that page, so the PR and the number of links together should be used to determine the worth of a link. You can use the PR Checker tool at http://biz-whiz.com/prchecker.html to compare the pr transfer figures, this tool provides an exact value for the estimated pr transfer based on a presumed formula.

2> Direct or Redirected Link
Some sites like to keep track of which link gets how many clicks. Many people believe that this will prevent the PR from flowing; generally this is true but not always. A 302 redirect is a temporary redirect which does not pass the PR, where as a 301 permanent redirect allows the PR to flow. For example, see the google back links at http://www.google.com/search?q=link:http://biz-whiz.com/ebooks/imm/ you will find that all the links are redirected from http://biz-whiz.com/Downloads-req-getit-lid-4.html – This is true for all our ebooks for sale at http://biz-whiz.com/Downloads-req-viewdownload-cid-5.html – So the point I am making is that not all redirected links are bad. The HTTP Headers tool in the IP Toolbox at http://biz-whiz.com/Sections-article17-page1.html can be used to find out if the redirect is a 301 or 302. It is a good idea to allow the partner webmaster the choice of a direct link or a redirected link as done at our link submission page for our links directory at http://biz-whiz.com/Web_Links-req-AddLink.html

3> Meta Tags
The robots meta tags determines if a page will be indexed by the searchengine or not. If the page linking to you has a meta tag like

then there is no use of a link from that page

4> robots.txt exclusions
The robots.txt file is used to inform the searchengine spider which pages on a site should not be indexed. When you exchange links it is a good practice to look at domainname/robots.txt just to get an idea if the page where your link is going to be placed is within reach of the crawlers – or not.

5> javascript includes or redirects
Some webmasters may place links in an external javascript file! Google has been crawling external .js files and it is not likely that the search engines can be fooled. You should always prefer an on page link to a javascript link.

6> IFRAMES
An IFRAME is a page inside another page. If you encounter a site that is using an IFRAME to link to other sites, you should visit the IFRAME url and check the PR of that page independent of the outer page. You should determine the worth of the link by the PR of the inner page.

7> In Context Links
There is a good amount of speculation and I myself do believe that incontext links are given more importance by the searchengines. So if there was a choice between an in-context link like
The http://biz-whiz.com>work at home business community …
and a standalone link like
Work at Home
I would certainly go for the in-context link.

8> Link Title
It is important to have your keywords in your link text. In addition to the link text the link ‘title’ parameter also is believed to play some role.
http://biz-whiz.com title=”Home Business”>Work at Home
is preferable to http://biz-whiz.com>Work at Home
When you move your mouse over the first link, you will find a small tooltip like description for the link. The title parameter works link the alt for images.

9> Bold
Links in bold are believed to be given more importance,
http://biz-whiz.com>Work at Home
Is preferable to http://biz-whiz.com>Work at Home

10> Prominence
Some people have debated that the higher on the page that your link appears, the more important it is considered by the search engines.

Those are the points to remember when you exchange links. When you search in google for link:yoursite.com you will be able to see the important backlinks for your site (or your competitor’s). Usually pages with PR4 and above will show in google backlinks and these links are the most valuable link partners from the viewpoint of the search engines.

What is Affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing is also synonymous with the following terms: associate marketing, associate programs, bounty programs, revenue-sharing, referral and partnership programs.

Originating in the USA several years ago with Amazon.com, affiliate marketing has quickly gained acceptance in North America as a viable and effective method of obtaining online screened and targeted site traffic, ongoing revenue generation and building consumer credibility.

This explosive growth and acceptance of affiliate marketing is also rapidly expanding into the European and Asian business community, including being translated into numerous languages.

Associate marketing or associate programs are simply revenue sharing arrangements established by sponsor companies selling a variety of online products and services. Web site owners are financially rewarded for sending referrals or customers to the business in numerous ways.

Financial compensation results to the website owner when a referral goes directly to the sponsors site and completes the sponsors terms of acceptance.

Terms of acceptance could include that the referral do any of the following: visiting a site, completing an application or obtaining a quote, registering for a free newsletter, downloading and installing software or making a consumer purchase.

The subsequent payment for the lead or referral are defined by the sponsor, and can range from a simple one time click through payment or a fixed commission rate, to a multi-tiered payment scheme resembling a MLM matrix that includes potential revenue from future lifetime purchases made by referrals of referrals.

Regardless of the payment method chosen, an equitable affiliate program results is a Win Win Win financial situation for all parties involved. The Sponsor receives additional site traffic and potential revenue from a new member; the Webmaster(s) receives revenue for providing a qualified lead; and the site visitor finds what they were looking for, at an acceptable price.

There are currently hundreds of thousands of Affiliate programs available, ranging from corporate sites such as Wal-mart to individual entrepreneurs promoting a single publication, and new competition is arriving daily. To help find complimentary Affiliate programs for your website or general information purposes, several free directories such as Associate Programs at http://www.associateprograms.com and Refer-it at http://www.refer-it.com maintain ongoing catalogues of new, existing and deleted affiliate programs.

These directory sites also contain a wealth of affiliate information, proven marketing tips and techniques, consumer ratings of programs and links to supportive software. The Associate Programs directory has links to thousands of archived and informative articles and includes a popular bi-monthly newsletter that includes the latest affiliate news and global success stories.

The Refer-it site ranks thousands of listed affiliate programs with a four star rating, that is extremely accurate concerning the reliability and integrity of each affiliate program offered.

Being successful with affiliate programs requires the use of certain techniques. Yet it is surprising how few affiliates are using many of these methods.

Here are 7 secrets to boosting your affiliate commissions each month:…

1. Use a variety of text links and personal recommendations. A personal recommendation of an affiliate product can increase your conversion ratios dramatically.

2. Use ezine ads to market your affiliate products. A well placed ezine ad in a popular ezine will bring many sales.

3. Develop an email course and sell your affiliate products via text links in each part of the email course. You can easily set up an email course with autoresponders so that it gets delivered automatically.

4. Spend 75% of your time marketing your affiliate products. A real key to success with affiliate programs is the marketing and the more time you spend marketing the more sales commissions you make.

5. Write your own articles and submit them to article resource sites. You can put a link to one of your affiliate products in the resource box. This can be an incredibly successful method for increasing affiliate commissions.

6. Do not just sell affiliate products direct. Join 2-tier programs and work on getting affiliates signed up under you. You can build an amazingly large passive income stream using this technique effectively.

7. Pick products that sell easily online. For example, ebooks are a naturally good seller on the internet. They are automatic and get delivered virtually immediately.

There is no holy grail to affiliate success but there are tips to increasing your monthly affiliate check. Use these techniques and you too will become a successful affiliate.

Affiliate programs are one of the web’s most effective marketing techniques. They create a win-win situation by which site A refers a visitor to site B, and site B pays site A a commission if that visitor purchases something. If you are the referrer site (affiliate), you can make money with no overhead (no product, no warehouse, no collection risk). On the other hand, the destination site receives a steady stream of qualified leads from hundreds, maybe thousands of affiliate sites, and doesn’t have to spend a dime unless a visitor purchases something.

To maximize effectiveness, affiliate sites need to keep in mind some common sense suggestions:

1) Resist the temptation to add too many affiliate links. Affiliate link overkill confuses visitors and hurts credibility. You want your visitors to view your site as a value-adding destination and not just a cheesy sales site. Recommend links to products you have tried, or that come from good, solid companies. Don’t recommend something you don’t know just because you’re getting paid. Give your visitors the best advice and they will reward you.

2) If you write articles for your website, try not to include the affiliate links in the body of your articles: it will give the impression that you have a vested interest in recommending them. You want your visitors to trust your advice, so don’t turn your article into an excuse to promote products and make a commission. It’s OK to include affiliate links, but do it on a side bar or on a resource table. Whenever possible, link to your affiliate partners with text links (since banner ad click-through is at its lower rate ever, and people tend to ignore banners).

3) Include only affiliate links that are related to your business and the topic of interest to your visitors. Links to unrelated products will not generate good leads for the destination sites (and therefore won’t be a source of significant commissions for you), so they are best avoided.

4) Managing your affiliate programs can be a hassle if you have to deal with many different companies. Try to sign up with a site that administers many affiliate programs to chose from (one of the best out there are Commission Junction [www.cj.com] and Befree.com [www.befree.com]). These sites give you hundreds of affiliate programs to chose from, and act as a one-stop shop where you can sign up with multiple vendors using only one account and receiving one consolidated commission check.

5) Chose affiliate partners that offer long term cookies. A cookie is a mechanism that allows the destination site to know when a visitor is referred by your site. A long term cookie (for example, a three months cookie) means that a visitor who follows a link to one of your affiliate partners today but doesn’t purchase anything, can come back and purchase at anytime during the next three months and you will still be paid a commission. The best programs are those who offer unlimited cookies (although there are not so many of them around). However, a 90-day cookie or more is very good.

6) Link directly to the product page and not to the main page of the destination site. If you link to the main page, the visitor will have to find its way to the product and may not find it, making you lose commissions. By linking directly to the product, you will increase the prospects of the visitor buying the product (and of you making a commission). Many destination sites, like Amazon, recognize this fact and offer a higher commission to affiliates that link directly to the product pages than to those who only link to the main page.

Follow these simple guidelines and you will improve your chances of success with all your affiliate programs.

Mario Sanchez publishes The Internet Digest ( http://www.theinternetdigest.net ) a collection of tips and suggestions to help you design a better website and market it more effectively.

So you’ve decided to write a review of an affiliate program. What should your review include? The focus of your writing should be information that will help readers decide whether or not to participate in the affiliate program. Everyone has a different opinion on the key indicators of a quality program, but there are a few questions that almost anyone will ask when investigating an affiliate opportunity.

Will I make money with this program?
A truly valuable review will give the reader an accurate impression of what a participant would have to do to experience success with an affiliate program. If the product only appeals to a small, hard to reach market and will require extensive time and money invested into advertising, a potential affiliate will want to know. Does the company rely strictly on their network of affiliates to attract customers, or will someone who joins the program have to find ways to compete against a large company-sponsored advertising campaign in addition to other affiliates?

How much money will I make?
Several factors determine the amount of income an affiliate can earn with a program. Are you selling a subscription service (such as website membership) or a consumable product (such as disposable contact lenses) that means repeat purchases and a more reliable income source? Does the company track repeat customers by storing your affiliate referral id with the customer’s record in the database, or do they use the less reliable method of placing a cookie on the customer’s computer?

Is this a fly-by-night operation?
Another concern of affiliates is how long the program will be around. There’s nothing more discouraging than investing the necessary time to build a customer base and downline just to have the company go belly-up. If you have noticed indicators of a program’s long-term success or failure, people who read your review would benefit from your insight. Even if you aren’t 100% sure that a company will succeed or fail, it’s appropriate to include educated guesses as long as you explain your reasoning.

Why should I choose this opportunity over that one?
It can also be helpful to discuss how this opportunity matches up against similar programs. In this case “similar programs” refers to programs that provide comparable products or services as opposed to programs with comparable compensation plans.

A final consideration of your review may be length. Some people prefer to read detailed reviews that delve into every aspect of a company. Others prefer to read short reviews that highlight only the most noteworthy pros and cons. Both style have supporters and can result in quality reviews. The important thing is to share information that you found helpful when you were evaluating the program.

Have you ever wondered why it is very difficult for you to make a headway in the affiliate marketing game? Why have you signed up for so many programs with so much expectations and yet you have never being able to make a dime out of them all while some people are screaming about them making over $5,000 in the same program you signed for?

These people called “super affiliates” are just ordinary people like you but they do things differently from the rest of the crowd. They see the game from a different angle and they play it with a different strategy. How then do these super affiliates play their game?

The first strategy super affiliates adopt, is that instead of sending traffic to the site of the program/ product they are promoting, send it to theirs. You see, most people advertise their affiliate sites which people will go to and never buy anything.

Super affiliates understand that people are not inclined to buy anything at their first contact with the product, that they will need to be contacted on so many occasions before they can make the precious purchase. Super affiliates use this as an edge over their competitors.

When they drive traffic to their sites, they entice them to join their opt-in list by offering them something “nice” in return. After joining the list, the people can then be advertised to as long as the super affiliates want and so long the subscribers are not complaining.

So, it is very important for you to know that if you want to make it big in the affiliate game, you must have your own opt-in list. Stop spending money to send traffic away, instead bring them to your site and make them join your list by any means, it is very IMPORTANT.

Super affiliates do get to know the product they promote inside out. That is another advantage they exploit over their competitors. They buy the product they want to promote and they digest all the contents of the product so that they will be able to tell their prospects what is in it for them.

How many times have you signed up to promote a product you don’t even know about? Do you think if a sales person turns up at your door to tell you of a product, he cannot even tell its usefulness to you, will you buy from such a person? No! That is why some people will not buy whatever you promote, because they don’t really know what it will do for them and what it has done for you the promoter.

Get to know what you are promoting so that you can tell your prospects what the product is all about and how it can be of help to them. Your own personal testimonies matters a lot because it is what will motivate them to buy from you.

Another super affiliate’s game plan is that they stand out from the crowd.

Hello! How many times have you seen hundreds of people advertising the same product using same banners, classifieds and reports/ articles? If a prospect had seen so many of those at other sites, what gives you the impression that he will buy from you?

Super affiliates understand this, so they write their own classifieds, use their own banners and also write special reports to promote their programs.
Prospects always get drawn to those who are doing something different from the maddening crowd. So if you want to be upgraded to the level of a super affiliate, STAND OUT!

The EXTRA also stands out make one a super affiliate. They add extra(s) to the product they are promoting. People always want to make purchase from those who offered more value for their money.

Let’s assume ten affiliates approach you with the same product and nine of them offer the same thing and the last one chose to offer some extra bonuses to the product you are buying at the same amount. Which one will you probably buy from? The last one of course!

You can adopt this method too by offering a free report, course, freebie you got of the Net, an ebook or another product that is what the value of the one you are promoting. You have to offer MORE if you wish to sell MORE.

Lastly another super affiliate game plan I will wan to talk about, is that super affiliates always promote products in their chosen field.

How many times have you promoted some products in a field you don’t even know a hoot about? When you promote products in your own niche, you will find out that you will be more enthusiastic about it and even if you have not gone through the product before, you can easily recommend it to people.

The manner you will say something about it will just look as if you have already gone through use the product. Marketing a product in your own niche market, will always give you an added advantage because it is your area of expertise. never bother looking at which area is HOT!

Just check your own niche market out and then promote any product you find adopting all the strategies highlighted above and see what becomes of you. If you happen to be a tennis buff, and you happen to be promoting golf products, which you don’t know anything about? 🙁

What if a prospect decides to ask you a question about golf? 🙁 Do you think you will have anything to say? That is why it is important to stay in your own niche.

I believe you too can become a SUPER affiliate in no mean time, if you will adopt the game plan mentioned above. If others are doing it, why not you?

Never get discouraged by the mistakes of yesterday, look up to tomorrow with bright hope. NOW is the to get started!

Ron Pioneer Learn more about opt in list building and newsletter publishing from my website:
http://www.affila.com/

You’ve most likely seen them in ezines, websites, etc. and quite possibly clicked on a few of them. If you’ve been in affiliate marketing you might have even used them yourself… or at least you should have. Because it can save you both time and money.
What I’m talking about are cloaked affiliate links. That is, small HTML files that hide your referral ID, username, member #, etc… and/or shorten the full URL.

How Do They Work?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Usually the HTML file you use to cloak your affiliate URL
forwards the user to the actual affiliated website just moments
after clicking your cloaked link (or entering it into the web
browser). The HTML file can also be frame-based, meaning that it
will put the affiliate URL in an invisible frame so the user will
only see the URL to your cloaked link and not the URL of the
website you are directing the user to.
What Is The Purpose?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Many dishonest people will do anything they can to prevent
affiliate marketers from getting their commission for their hard
work. When people see a link that they recognize as an affiliate
link they might cut your username off and buy directly from the
website or even worse, they might replace your username with
theirs and take your commission.

Also, some people might be uncomfortable clicking on a link they
recognize as an affiliate link.

What link would you rather click on:
http://www.madisondynamics.com/index.php?13523
or
http://www.workathomemadeeasy.net/recommended/madison.html

Tests have shown that up to 30% of all affiliate commissions are
STOLEN by people who replace with their own link to “buy at a
discount” and it’s a serious problem.

How Can You Prevent That?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the service you are affiliated with uses cookies or other
tracking devices using a cloaked link that refreshes to the
affiliate URL should make sure that you get the commission/
referral you deserve. Because once the user clicks your cloaked
link and is redirected to your affiliate URL a cookie with your
referral ID is saved on the user’s computer and the user should
be less likely to succeed in stealing your commission.
Here is a sample of the HTML code you can use to create a HTML
file that refreshes to your affiliate URL:
content=”0;URL=http://www.YourAffiliateURL.com“>
Loading… please
wait
If you are not redirected in 10 seconds
http://www.YourAffiliateURL.com“>click here.
Just replace “http://www.YourAffiliateURL.com” with the referral
URL your affiliate program gave you.
However, if your affiliate service/program doesn’t use cookies or
if you’re not sure, it would be safer for you to use framed
cloaked links because then the user won’t see your full
affiliate URL and won’t be able to cut off your referral ID.
Here is a sample of the HTML code you can use to create a HTML
file that puts your affiliate URL into an invisible frame:
http://www.YourAffiliateURL.com” name=”mainFrame” border=0>
Just replace “http://www.YourAffiliateURL.com” with the referral
URL your affiliate program gave you. You should also change the
title to the actual name of your affiliate program or something
else you think is appropriate.
You should know though that people will always be trying to get
passed the cloaked links so there is never a 100% way of ensuring
your rightful commissions. But using cloaked links will
definitely decrease the chance of you losing out on a commission.
But How Can It Save You Time?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now that we have seen how cloaking your links can save you money
how can it save you time?

Well, I realized this recently when I decided to drop out of a
certain affiliate program. I had been promoting this program
on several places on the internet and the URL I was promoting was
a cloaked link I had created on my domain.

You can understand that I no longer wanted to promote a program I
was not affiliated with any more. So I was looking forward to at
least a half hour of searching the internet for places where I
had put a link to this program and either change it or delete it.

But that’s when I realized I didn’t have to hurry and delete all
these links so I wouldn’t be wasting money and credits on this
program. All I had to do was log in to my website and edit the
HTML file I had created to cloak the program’s URL and make the
file direct people to another URL I was comfortable promoting.

I could then later on when I had the time go find the places
where I had been promoting the program and update the information.
I could even just skip that if I didn’t want to, and if the
information promoting that URL wasn’t misleading, related to the
new URL. But even if you want to update the information or delete
the link sometimes you can’t. For example, on certain places
where you buy text links, etc.; then instead of that link
promoting a program you’re no longer affiliated with you are able
to promote another website, without any major effort.

* Tip: Even after you’ve gone through the websites where you had
put your cloaked link and deleted it I would recommend keeping
the file on your domain because there might be a few “ghosts”
left out there on the internet who still link to this file.

Resources To Help You Cloak Links
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you don’t know how to create HTML files and edit them or if
you don’t trust yourself to do it there are many services
available to help you:
* Affiliate Link Cloaker – makes it all easy and secure:
http://www.workathomemadeeasy.net/recommended/cloaklinks.html
* NameStick – cloak a link with an easy to remember domain:
http://www.workathomemadeeasy.net/recommended/cloakdomain.html
* TinyURL – cloak a link with 1 click:
http://www.tinyurl.com
* shorlify – like TinyURL, but with statistics too:
http://www.shorl.com
* CJB.net – one of the many free forwarding services out there:
http://www.cjb.net
* Here.is – another free forwarding service:
http://www.here.is
* Free .tk domain – get your own domain for free, pretty cool:
http://www.workathomemadeeasy.net/recommended/freetkdomain.html
Here are some places that provide you with free webspace where
you can put your cloaking HTML files:
* http://www.geocities.com
* http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/
* http://www.tripod.lycos.com/
* …if you want more places just do a Google search.
Although free webspaces are nice I would recommend putting the
cloaking files on your own domain, where you have total control
and don’t risk losing your files or being blocked by bandwidth
limits. Therefore I would recommend these hosting solutions >>
* Host4Profit – 300 MB webspace, 10 GB bandwith, great support:
http://www.workathomemadeeasy.net/recommended/host.html
* iProBuilder – set up a profit-pulling website in 24 hours or
less… – unlimited storage space!:
http://www.workathomemadeeasy.net/recommended/iprobuilder.html
Conclusion
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As an extra bonus, while you’re using your cloaked links to
promote on various websites you automatically increase your
search engine rankings because of all the incoming links to your
domain 😉 Plus, you’ll also be increasing your Alexa ranking
because of the extra page views.

So, to save you both time and money:

* Cloak your affiliate URL using the methods and services I
mentioned above
* Promote that cloaked link wherever you can
* Cash in those bigger commission checks
* ..and if you decide to leave the program just edit that one
file you created on your domain 🙂

Thanks for reading.

One of the hottest ways to sell affiliate products is using Google AdWords. Follow these tips and strategies to maximize your earning potential.

1. Seek out affiliate products that generate fifteen dollars or more in commission. Anything in the twenty-dollar range works well. Paying for clicks can add up quickly and when you do make a sell, it should be profitable.

2. The vendor must present a high quality website with first-rate graphics. If the site appears to be unprofessional, any potential buyer will loose confidence and leave before the sell is made.

3. Make it a requirement that the vendor website only displays one product or service on the referral page. Nothing kills a sell faster than having to many sells messages.

4. The vendor needs to include outstanding sales copy. It’s easy to realize the importance of this principle; words are what turn shoppers into buyers on the Internet.

5. When evaluating a potential affiliate program ask yourself if this product or service is something you would feel comfortable buying. Put yourself in the place of the buyer. If you wouldn’t buy it, why would they?

6. It’s preferable if the vendor site does not obviously advertise for the recruitment of more affiliates. An affiliate link is fine as long as it is low key.

7. The best affiliate programs will attempt to secure the email address of your referrals. Some prospects need to see a sales message at least seven times before they will buy. Make sure you still get credit for sales made during the follow up.

8. The vendor should provide testimonials. Testimonials create confidence and trust leading your prospects to make a purchase.

9. You will recognize a profitable affiliate program because at least one in fifty clicks creates a sell. Constantly monitor your expense versus profit for each set of keywords.

10. Track your keywords and delete any that do not get clicked on after two hundred impressions. The higher your click through rate, the higher position you receive in relation to your competitors.

The word “tier” shows up a lot in the affiliate marketing industry. In a general sense a tier is a step or level, but what does this mean in the context of affiliate marketing. The answer is: it depends.

Downline Levels
The most common meaning of tier is a carry-over from the compensation plans of network marketing companies that were in place before the Internet boom. When you introduce a new entrepreneur to the program, he is placed on your second tier. If that new entrepreneur then introduced his sister to the program, she would be placed on your third tier.

If the sister brought in a paying customer, she would receive a first tier commission. Her brother would receive a second tier commission, while you received a third tier commission (if the compensation plan included a third tier). In practice, an affiliate program can offer commissions on any number of tiers, although the vast majority of online affiliate programs only pay commissions on one or two tiers of activity.

Sales Volume
You would get a different picture of the word tier from Amazon’s compensation plan, where it refers to your sales volume. (The following numbers don’t reflect Amazon’s actual compensation plan, but they serve as an example.) On the first $500 worth of merchandise you sell, you receive a 10% commission. Up to $500 is the first tier. The second tier is for sales up to $1500. If you manage to sell between $500 and $1500, you will earn 11% commission. Each tier is an additional range of monthly sales in which you earn a higher commission (or receive other forms of compensation).

The Problem
The confusion arises when affiliate programs emphasize that they run a 2-tier compensation plan in their affiliate recruiting efforts. In most cases, this refers to the downline levels definition, and participants can expect to receive compensation based on the performance of affiliates they introduce to the program.

Occasionally, a program makes this claim when referring to sales volume tiers. This isn’t inaccurate, but it is misleading. The managers of these programs are almost never intentionally trying to mislead. More often, they have thoughtfully crafted a compensation plan that rewards affiliates who perform well, and they want to announce that feature to all potential affiliates.

Who’s Right?
You could make an argument for either definition of tier. If you’re trying to communicate with other people in the affiliate industry, though, you need to give strong consideration to which meaning is generally accepted by most people. That is the downline levels definition.
