I think it better you buy domain in bulk then you will get it cheap and if you buy individual then also it would costing you not more than a 1 USD depending upon the extension.

ya definitely you can, some forums instead of paying them they give you free domains and hosting in substitute, also in some contest you can make that.

I think it is not free at all, we need some time to post in order to get domain.
and it is better if you have luck, you can get domain easily for winning contest.
i know some site that give you domain just for 25 post.
