I think you are right and many people are not aware of these things and my friend purchased a pr3 blogger site from a person but when google update its page rank his site lost his total page rank now his site has zero page rank...and he spent $ 50 on it.

Normally i know a site pr rank will drop only when the site is against google TOS, then google will drop the site PR rank as a penalty to it. Your friends when buying that time is hard to check anythings happend to the site before, it is also risky to buy old blogs that way.
