why people download wordpress scripts?

Friends, I found that many people are downloading the software wordpress 2.7 and installing in their web server to create blogs. I wonder why people are opting for such lengthy procedures when they can create blogs directly from wordpress.com by just signing up and writing posts.

Can anyone help me with this?

The important thing you are missing is the blogs that you get from wordpress doesnot support google ads.
Nor any sort of ads, you can only write in it and promote it for interest and not for earning.
And again you cant get your domain from that blog, that is why members buy domains and install wordpress.

Thanks a lot for your explanation. Then do we say that wordpress.org is a "content management system"?. Moreover, do we get such software from other blog websites like blogger, blogsome etc.

Features enabled in Blogger are similar to word press because you have automated features where you need not program anything or don't need scripts or html editors to take care of things.
But Word press has unique features with its style and content being unique.

Are you talking of premium wordpress and the free wordpress (like blogger).

Free wordpress offer free hosting and domain but it includes .wordpress.com in domain .

Well I don't know anything about premium wordpress. I'm talking about the software wordpress.org which I can download freely from internet to install it in my hosting server.
I haven't tried it yet, but I read in other forums that many members are doing this, though I'm not sure what benefit they are getting from it.

You get pre designed theme and other features which you need not work hard to design it your self.
You get a wide selection of theme, features, applications etc,. absolutely free.
Such an application for free .. ofcourse no one will lose the oppurtunity.

what i know about wordpress versions is for good plugins for different purpose,ad management ,point system ,many modules or plugins available in new versions.Though i'm not sure.
