Nops, It cannot. HTML is basically a Markup Language which is basically used to represent the Data on the Web. But XML is totally other way round - It is basically used to Store the Data and not used to represent the Data.

HTML can use XML to store data and to read from Data but XML cannot not make use of HTML for any reason. This makes both different to each other. You cannot replace XML with HTML and other way as both have unique features.
