htdocs and public_html

Friends, I noticed some weh hosting companies ask us to place all our files in "htdocs" folder and some in "public_html", so I wonder what the difference is between them. Moreover, some host don't ask us to create any folder called "htdocs" or "public_html" but when we upload files, it automatically gives the links as "sitename.com/htdocs or /public_html". I wonder how it is so. Hope you help me.

Both "public_html" and "htdocs" is a specific type of folder which the hosting company use for us to publish our files. Only those folder will set the permission for us to read and write, and for our visitors to browse the contents as webpages in the browser. There are also some common name for this like "wwwroot", "http_docs" and sometimes they use both as one is a replicate of another one.

Thanks eddielkk for the explanation but my question why some host use public_html and why some use "htdocs". Is it because of the variation in their servers or Operating system? that I have to find out.
