Dear mustang, When you make a website, you need to make space in upper, lower and both side. Than you signup with Bidvertiser, Adbrite and apply for Google Adsense. You have to simply copy and paste the HTMl codes, that are given by the advertisers, wherever you want to display the banners or ads. It's always best to keep the ads on the top of the page, which will draw visitors focus easily.

For blogger, just add HTML codes on page element.
For wordpress, just put ads code on widget.

You can have any type of ads actually but the best suited are for banner ads are the top and bottom. Google Text ads for the sides (please restrict to one side otherwise the screen estate is lost).
You can go a bit further and use linking text ads which make ads come for specific keywords in your blog / forum a great way to make some extra cash.
